Yeats poem, The Second Coming. However, this cosmological concept, also referred to as anima mundi, predates Yeats by thousands of years. While Plato is often credited as the first to write about the idea that the world possesses a soul underlying all existence, such a belief is also thought to have existed in ancient Buddhist and Taoist traditions. For Yeats, Spiritus Mundi served as the source of much of his poetic inspiration, and indeed, Yeats’ writings left an indelible mark on the global literary landscape.
